I'm Ellen

June 18th, 1975
It's just about summer time here in North Carolina. Best time of the year if I do say so myself. Just so y'all know who your reading about my full name is Ellen Hillsman and I am turning eleven this year. Some kids look forward to their birthdays cause of all the presents they get, but I try not to get too excited about it. I know my Daddy isn't gonna bother with anything except pouring himself another drink, and my mama seems too sick to move lately. She's been in and out of the hospital this week on account of her romantic fever. And what does that big ox do? Not a darn thing. All he does is complain that he's got nothing to eat and no one to clean his drawers. That's no bother of mine though. On days that mama is in the hospital I go over to my best friend's house, Starletta. Even if she is colored she is still my best friend, and oh boy no one can make me laugh like her. It is so much more fun to hang around with her instead of Miss Peesherpants. Oh yes my cousin Dora is the same age as me and you bet her mama thinks such a "big girl" would do no such thing. Get real Aunt Nadine. Good thing I don't have to see them very often. Well my mama is having a good day today and I heard her say that we have to go see her mama today before church so catch y'all next time.
